March and the resolutions

I haven't written for a bit for good reason. In January I had my son Maxwell and in February I spent most of my days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or adjusting to being a new mommy. I am still adjusting as March began today. I thought today was a good time to update the blog on my New Year's Resolutions for 2013. Surprisingly with all of the big changes in my life, I still feel it is going pretty well. Here are some updates:

-- This year, I want to make a goal to read my bible all the way through again. I have done this in years past and each time I do it, I gain more from the word and the daily discipline of being in God's presence. This year I would like to dig a little deeper and focus more on the language of the times, on word meanings, and focus on where I am at as a mother in the word.

I am happy to report that I am on track to read the Bible through in a year. I used my time at the hospital to sit and read my Bible while looking at my precious baby and now, I read it to him while we are snuggling. This really keeps me focused on the word and also helps me navigate the new responsibilities in my life.

-- This year, I want to find a church in Southern Indiana that I can put roots down in. I would like to find somewhere where both Anthony and I feel at home, has a great children's ministry area, and places for Anthony and I to serve in our faith community with our spiritual gifts. I would like to visit churches in the area with the prayer of God leading this journey and not my preconceived notions of where I should be or what a church should "look like."

This one has been a challenge in the new year. Our Calendar for January had a different church to visit on it each Sunday. Well, God had other plans because I started to have complications in the pregnancy and was required to do several stress tests a week and then was admitted to the hospital in Louisville. Since we have been home from Louisville, we are adjusting to new parenthood and not really getting enough sleep to attend church on Sundays. I hope that we can pick this up in the coming months as Max gets a little older and less susceptible to illness.

-- This year I want to clean up my language, thought life, and critical spirit. Although I am certainly not a trucker in my language, I use far too many negative words, far too many critical words, and spew a lot of ugly at times. This is something I would like to focus on in 2013 and become someone whose fruit is more sweet than bitter and sarcastic.

To be honest, I think this one has gone to the back burner and I needed to dig it back out again. I am not using foul language because I spend 99% of my day with my precious sweet little boy...but I think I still need to work on my critical spirit and negative words. Reading this again reminded me that it needed a booster shot!

-- This year, I want to develop my spiritual disciplines to be something that is far more consistent. I would like to observe my prayer life, quiet time, solitude, church attendance, service, etc... and really focus on getting closer to God in a more consistent way. I want to have far fewer gaps in our conversations and far more moments of reflection on where I am in Him and where I am supposed to go.

The big changes in this year have been my Bible reading and prayer time. I pray each night with Max which helps me keep on track with talking to God period but my own time is growing also because I depend so heavily on God in parenting. I never knew how hard of a job it is and without God, I would be lost in it. I need to still work on Church Attendance (see above) and solitude and quiet time. Anthony and I are working out a schedule for feedings/sleeping/alone time so that we can take care of ourselves, Max, and our marriage. We are a great team!

-- This year, I want to focus more on developing my Proverbs 31 qualities by praying towards that, learning more about that and focusing my other goals on those tenants. I want my relationship with Anthony and Max to reflect those qualities and really see myself make improvements in this area this year.

I do see some improvement in this since Max was born. I have always been entirely career focused and very identified in accomplishments and accolades. This new journey of being a mother doesn't really allow me to focus on that since every day looks the same in terms of accomplishments and it is really hard with virtually no fanfare. It requires me to really look at Proverbs 31 and find my identity and true worth in who I am as a woman of God.

-- This year, I want to make more focused time for Anthony on set days. We have (for several years) observed Married Monday and kept Monday quite sacred and do not commit to other people, projects, work, or obligations on that day. We have slipped a little from this and need to get back on having a more consistent time that is focused on us. I would like to make it better from my end by taking the time to plan every other Married Monday, get really ready for our dates by grooming more appropriately (I know all the ladies hear  me on that!), and silence the cell phone and remind others in my life who "need" me that it is a special time for our family and it is something we are not willing to budge on readily.

Although this looks very different with a new baby in the house, I am proud to say Anthony and I are pulling it off. We do it a bit differently now and that is to be expected. When he gets home at 11, we spend from 11-1 am together and we eat a late dinner, have a glass of wine, watch a movie or relax in some other way. We also still spend Monday and Tuesday having family time including special time for Anthony and I when Max is napping.

-- This year, I want to make a concerted effort to lower our debt that was created during a period of unemployment and has gone on due to the move and several other factors. I would like to focus myself more on spending less on luxuries, making better financial choices, and exercising self control when money gets into our bank accounts. It is easy to build pressure and frustration in marriage when finances are out of control. Anthony and I have been lucky that we do not FIGHT over money but I would like to eliminate all areas of un-needed pressure especially in adding another person to our household and new financial obligations.

I am most proud of this resolution because it was one I have wanted to avoid since 2010 and did a pretty good job of it. Having Max so early required Anthony to take 3 weeks  of work off that was unpaid time. It was a huge sacrifice to our family as we live paycheck to paycheck due to the debt acquired. God was so good and provided not only for our lodging, food, and gasoline in Louisville but also our February Bills since Anthony did not work. Since we have been back, I have opened all bills, logged them into a notebook with account numbers, phone numbers, balances, and what the bill is for and am now working my way through the notebook on calling these places and arranging to pay them off. Many are medical bills and there are a few credit cards due to 9 months of unemployment in 2010. Either way, Anthony and I have a goal to be debt free (with the exception of student loans) by 2015 and buy a family car with cash next year. I am excited to see us have a more financially free life and be better stewards of what God gives us.

-- This year, I want to contribute more to our household by holding up my responsibilities better. I would like to have a real conversation about what would make Anthony's life easier in being a husband, father, and worker. My job as his wife is to be a helper and I would like to start to make those things a priority more than they are now. Anthony is exceptionally helpful to me and sometimes I feel less helpful to him.

I still feel like Anthony is the better helper especially now that Max is here. I have, however, made a schedule that helps us both get adequate rest and also time with Max. Also, I prepare all of the meals, do all of the cleaning, and manage our household finances. Anthony just simply said that taking care of myself and Max is enough help to him. He really is a saint sometimes!

-- This year, I want to focus on keeping our marriage passionate through our first year of being parents. I know that this will prove to be more complicated than it ever has but I would like to make an effort to keep our time together important and focus on our connection daily so that Max sees the parents that created him, ones that are IN LOVE and enjoy each other.

I feel like given the circumstances, we are navigating this quite nicely. I will leave you out of the details ;)

-- This year, I want to help Anthony in regards to meeting his own goals. Anthony would like to start taking college courses and further his education, learn how to play guitar, and really enjoys watching movies. I would like to make it my position this year to encourage those goals, help in any way I can, and participate in ways that would make him more excited about his personal goals.

This resolution is going pretty well. Tonight I am going to file Anthony's Fafsa for him to start college classes in the fall which is a big step for him. Also, I have been watching more movies with him and trying to take the time to be affectionate which is something Anthony really needs.

-- This year, I want  to develop a more consistent relationship with diabetes. I am currently on an insulin pump and that has drastically helped my diabetic control. I need to be more consistent with eye examinations, dental examinations, taking blood glucose daily, eating more regular meals to combat highs and lows, attending all dr appointments and following up with dr's orders, and exercising more for better glucose control.

I am still being hard-core on top of my diabetic care. I am having trouble maintaining my sugars since having Max so I scheduled an appointment with my specialist today and have plans to schedule an eye exam next week. I have also started back to exercising since having Max. It is going to be a long haul to health but I am going to stay on it.

-- This year, I want to develop a better eating schedule. I eat better than most people do, however, I often skip meals and make myself extra hungry in the evenings. It would be better for me to get back to eating 6 smaller meals per day and focus on nutritionally dense foods. I have improved my eating habits exponentially but there is certainly room for improvement.

Since Max eats 8 times per day and I do about 4-5 of those feedings, I have started trying to eat when he eats. I try to feed him and then when he lays down for a nap, I try to eat something good for me but also eat frequently to keep blood sugars maintained and metabolism up.

-- This year, I want to develop my exercise habits back. When I lived in California I was very good at making daily exercise a priority due to the beautiful weather. It was considerably easier there. This year, I want to take advantage of having my sister as a walking partner, a willing and supportive spouse to walk with a new baby to take out in the fresh air. Although the weather is bad part of the year, I have multiple sources of exercise available to me and need to develop that habit again.

Most of this year so far was spent on being pregnant, having a baby, and healing from a C-section so I just got back into exercise this week. On Wednesday I did a cardio dance workout and felt like I might die so I realized that I will have to cut it back and start with something lower impact so I can get a whole work out in. When the spring is here, I want to start taking walks with Max and I am going to try to use my time alone to get some more creative work outs in as well.

-- This year, I want to have better sleeping habits. Although I will have a new baby, it does not excuse not taking the time to rest and be rested for his well-being and mine. I need to set a more regular schedule for sleep and take advantage of my husband's offer to trade off getting up with Max and doing the care of Max during the day. I want to take the naps I need, get the rest I need, and not overdo caffeine in order to compensate for rest not gotten.

I have finally figured out (after 3 weeks) how to get Anthony and I adequate rest with Max. I get 6 hours of sleep per night and Anthony gets 5 hours of sleep per night on our new schedule. Anthony has always needed less than me due to diabetes and he pushed for me to have the extra hour but with a new baby, I think 6 hours is doing pretty good. Thank God I have a helpful and supportive husband.

-- This year, I want to keep my home organized and free of clutter in order to make me feel less stressed and more at peace. I am one of those people who feels incredibly anxious in disorder and having things orderly and organized helps my mental and physical health. This year has been a very disorganized year with family crisis, being pregnant, and just adjusting to a new place so I am hoping next year I can develop more stability in these areas.

This one is taking time since we were gone to Louisville for 3 weeks and came back to dust, laundry from the trip, and we had a new baby to take care of. I am trying to get the house back to order and try to organize my time and areas to best suit all our mental health and time management. So far, I am working on it but am not even close to where I want to be.

I will catch up the rest of my resolutions tomorrow since there is quite a list. I hope you are all meeting your goals and having a great 2013. My favorite year yet! :)

Good changes

Hey everyone,

The new year is proving to be a success in terms of resolutions and plans to make things better. Anthony and I listened to a sermon this morning and totally spoke to both of us and we felt really fed and also challenged for changes in our new year/life in general. I spent my day today running errands including grocery shopping and handling things for our baby shower. My awesome friend Carrie is hosting the shower and she has done such a great job preparing for it. I am very excited to celebrate my boy and enjoy a day about him before he gets here!

In the latter part of the evening I went over and had dinner and time with my sister, her boyfriend, and my nieces. It was nice to be around them for a few hours. Now, I am home for the evening and going to make Anthony and I some yummy dinner and tomorrow is date day. I am really looking forward to a day with my husband. I plan to get myself as pretty as I can and just spend the day with him and ignore the rest of the world. I think that is completely healthy.

I have been enjoying my day to day Bible reading in getting through the whole Bible this year. I have loved the trek back through it and learning different things than I have in the past. I am also really enjoying getting my house organized for better stress management and time management. I love the clean smell and organized surroundings that help me enjoy the last few months of my pregnancy.

Anthony and I have also embarked on a "get out of debt" and savings plan for the year and I am excited to be able to report on how much debt we have eliminated and how much savings we have developed each month. Since we do want to pay off debt as much as possible, it means that sometimes the savings won't be as much. Our goal is just to be able to save $1200 by the end of the year and reduce our debt by double that or more. We are hoping for more peace, more joy, more obedience, and more bringing glory to God in 2013.

Tuesday we have two appointments for the baby and Wednesday we have one so we will be updating both the personal blog and Max's blog for family and friends. Hope you'll stop back in to see us. Have a great second week of the new year!

A little bit of pampering

The 2nd day of the New Year and I got a few things done that had to be done. I went and ran some errands for my mom and spent the rest of the day at home working on various projects including making important phone calls, cleaning up, and organizing. This seems to be the story of my life these days. Max's appointments are scheduled for almost the rest of the pregnancy and we are working towards some new financial goals since we are now down to one income.

Scentsy is going to be a big part of our lives this year and we have tons of goals for our Scentsy business. We are really loving the company and find it very fulfilling to sell products we believe in and build relationships with people who are our customers. I will be doing a few of our Scentsy parties in January and February and we will probably take a break from home parties when Max is born and then kick it back into gear after adjusting.

We find it so fun to do a business together and bring income into our house that doesn't require more time apart. It is nice to be able to do that.

Tonight, when Anthony got home, I was very spoiled to have him rub me down with cocoa butter since my skin is super dry and itchy in pregnancy and he painted my toenails for me. It's good to have a husband who is so caring and nurturing. My 2nd day of 2013 was great and tomorrow my goals are the following:

-- Make a few more important phone calls setting up health care for Max and getting our ducks in a row financially

-- Work more on the house and get ready for our new water heater to be installed.

-- Figure out Coupon deals for the week to save as much money as possible on household needs

-- Make some final decisions regarding Max's room and furniture

-- Enjoy my day and read and watch some pleasurable tv to relax.

I pray that your third day of 2013 goes well and that are you richly blessed!

Welcome 2013

Well it's officially the year I will be a mommy! Today was surreal waking up and realizing that. I am so incredibly blessed to have my little family and am really looking forward to seeing what God is going to do in 2013.

My resolutions are of the utmost importance and I woke up with them on my mind today. I watched my nephews this morning for my sister and felt a deep sense of love and compassion for them in knowing that I was building that relationship even more in the New Year.

I will be watching my nieces this afternoon as well and look forward to time with them. I learned this morning that my little sister is going through a bit of a crisis and it went right through my mind to pray for her and be available in what ways I could be. I really am praying that God moves my heart in relationships this year.

I am 30 weeks pregnant as of yesterday and every day closer to due date is making me so excited to see my little dude. The plan for today is to see my nieces, run a few errands, work on the nursery and other household chores and then have New Years Dinner with my sister Hilliary and her family and my mama. I want to invite Britt as well so maybe I will see my whole family today :)

Later on in the evening:

New Year's was absolutely fabulous. I was able to see all 5 of my nieces and nephews. Each one of them is so special to me and adds so much happiness and joy to my life. Living in Indiana the last year has been so great because I get to watch them grow and change daily instead of twice a year. I also ran to CVS and was able to get a pack of diapers (after coupons and Extra Care bucks) for FREE. They actually paid me 70 cents to take those diapers off their hands. I love a great deal! This year will really require me to be creative and frugal in that I am officially not working and we are on Anthony's income and Scentsy income for a while. We are not sure yet if I am going to go back to work in the fall or not but that is also not something we can really decide until meeting Max and seeing what the challenge of being a mom and a Type I diabetic will mean for us.

Later in the evening, I cooked a New Year's Meal for my family of Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Cheesy Potato Casserole. We ate at Hilliary's house and watched a few movies and just enjoyed the boys while they played around us. It is always good to take the time to really enjoy your family and be in the moment. We got home around midnight and Anthony and I cuddled up on the couch and watched "X-Men: Origins." My husband is so into Comic Book movies and Superheroes so part of my supporting his hobbies and interests this year will be exposing myself to all of the movies and characters he loves.

We would have liked to get something done on Max's room but we really didn't take the time to do that. I am hoping to get some other cleaning done tomorrow that will help me really show his room attention and begin to get organized for the big day! Lastly, we got some organization done after all when we upgraded my Iphone and cleaned off unneeded pictures, apps, etc... so that my phone is more streamlined for the job of mommying. It is interesting how clutter in every facet of your life really annoys you when you are about to have a child. I have lost emails, pictures, and contacts by not keeping up on my electronics properly and letting clutter in these areas over take me. I have been careful lately not to spend too much time on the computer or social media in hopes of de-cluttering and making my time more valuable for Anthony, Max, and mainly Jesus.

Well, the first day of 2013 has come to a close and I really was happy with my priorities for the day and spending time with those I love. I did my first day of Bible reading and it is always enlightening to begin studying Creation, Jesus' birth, and wisdom books at the beginning of the year. I am so looking forward to my journey with Jesus this year as a mommy/wife/woman of God.

All of my love in 2013

New Year, New Title, New baby!

It's been a while since I have written on my personal blog for several reasons including but not limited to 1. I am pregnant and that has required me to work and then fall asleep directly after getting home, giving me no time to be creative and assertive. 2. I have been trying to keep Max's blog up to date so that people are aware of what's going on in the pregnancy and with him and that has been the blog I have centered on for the last 7 months....and 3. I haven't had much to say with my placenta brain forgetting every thought that enters my consciousness.

Today, it is December 30th and that means I am gearing up for my annual resolutions. I have always been a firm believer in making New Year's resolutions. I love a fresh start even if it is a Monday and I just want to do better in getting my chores around the house accomplished. I love goals and find that in my life, I have never achieved anything without having a goal in mind and steps to achieve it. Also, I am a psychotherapist by trade and that makes me very centered on measurable progress. That all being said, today's post is about changes.

This year brings not only a fresh year in 2013 but I gain a new title this year, Mommy. I have already accumulated several titles including Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Therapist, Tutor, Wife, Friend, Christian, and now the all encompassing,....Mommy. Some of these titles mean the world to me like Aunt, Sister, Daughter, Wife and then others are things that I love doing and being but they hold much less power for me like Therapist, Tutor, and anything else that is about my own personal achievements. The one that stands above all others and guides all of the other titles is Christian. This year, I am really hoping to focus all of my attention  on resolutions that bring that title into focus more readily.

Another thing that has been a focus in the past is writing several resolutions as well as learning experiences from the previous year. I think that has been very helpful for me in finding out where I am with God, learning about myself, learning about life in general, and gearing up for another year of learning. That being said, I will start today's post with five monumental things I feel that I learned in 2012.

1. I learned that nothing is within my power in terms of life/death. Making a baby is "easy" according to some but in our case it was a journey. I learned that when I gave up my control and fasted/prayed and trusted God that maybe I wasn't going to be a mother at all, I gained peace. I gained peace over my losses and peace over my future.

2. I learned that taking care of oneself is the best gift you can give your husband, your family, and  yourself. Being able to step out of your medical comfort zones and take a leap of faith really does pay off. I was able to commit to the insulin pump in August and my health has been better this year than in the last 17 years of having Type I diabetes.

3. I learned that being pregnant doesn't make me any more special than I was before. When I was watching woman after woman get pregnant and face enormous amounts of jealousy after losing my first child, I was so centered on them being "special" or called. The truth is, this is not a calling or does not make me any more special. My relationship with Christ makes me have worth. My relationship with my husband makes me feel loved. My being created fearfully and wonderfully makes me know that Christ died for me and all others. There is no division line between moms and childless women. We are all in this together and I pray that this learning extends to other areas I struggle in.

4. I learned that where you live has little to do with your happiness level. I used to think because I lived in California, had tons to do, and great weather...that was why I was happy and moving back to Indiana would make me miserable. I have been happier in the last year of my life than any year of my life. I am happy in my family, in my marriage, in my mental health, in my physical health, etc.... It is doing what is good for your soul and your spirit that makes you "Happy!"

5. I learned that the best friends I will ever have are the ones who will embrace my husband and my son as their own family and pray for them, be concerned for them, and always speak kindly of them. Those people will also respect my boundaries and not get involved in ways that are not welcome or give unsolicited advice. They simply pray and support. Thank you Lord for those friends.

Those are my 2012 learning experiences and now onto the resolutions. My resolutions will be broken up into my top five priorities and there will be 5 resolutions under each priority for a total of 25 resolutions for the year of 2013!!! I hope you are making your resolutions and believing you can get them accomplished.

Priority #1: My relationship with Christ

-- This year, I want to make a goal to read my bible all the way through again. I have done this in years past and each time I do it, I gain more from the word and the daily discipline of being in God's presence. This year I would like to dig a little deeper and focus more on the language of the times, on word meanings, and focus on where I am at as a mother in the word.

-- This year, I want to focus more on developing my Proverbs 31 qualities by praying towards that, learning more about that and focusing my other goals on those tenants. I want my relationship with Anthony and Max to reflect those qualities and really see myself make improvements in this area this year.

Priority #2: My relationship with Anthony

Priority # 3: My physical health

-- This year, I want  to develop a more consistent relationship with diabetes. I am currently on an insulin pump and that has drastically helped my diabetic control. I need to be more consistent with eye examinations, dental examinations, taking blood glucose daily, eating more regular meals to combat highs and lows, attending all dr appointments and following up with dr's orders, and exercising more for better glucose control.

Priority #4: Mothering

-- This year, I want to spend as much time enjoying Max's first year as I can. I want to be less consumed with being perfect and more consumed with being with him. I want to learn who he is, appreciate him, pray for him, and learn how to be a good mother to him.

-- This year, I want to take better care of me overall in order to model that for Max. I want to be kind and patient with his wonderful daddy, help him see the love of Christ and make a happy home for him to grow up in.

-- This year, I want to make sure that complaining is far from my lips. I realize that being a mother is the hardest job on the planet but I also realize that people would give their left leg for the opportunity. To constantly complain about being a mother is an insult to those that struggle and spitting on the amazing blessing of Max's life.

-- This year, I want to keep Max's family here and in California well updated on who he is becoming and allow him to have the amazing privilege of having relationships with extended family. I am lucky to have really great family on every side and he is too. It is important they feel like a priority and he gets to know them while they are here.

-- This year, I want to take every opportunity to have family time that I can and keep that time sacred. Anthony and I have already specified time on our schedule that is focused on the three of us and I want to be sure that I am using that time to enjoy my family and not just be productive and busy. Sometimes soaking things up is the best way to appreciate them.

Priority # 5: Family

-- This year, I want to take my older niece and nephew one day per month on a date with Aunt Erica. I enjoy them so much and the younger ones are not yet ready but Shawn and Kaylea really enjoy that.

-- This year, I want to spend more time with the younger nieces and nephews by visiting them once per week and getting to know them more personally.

-- This year, I want to have a better relationship with my mom and sisters by delegating tasks in taking care of my mom better so that I am not resentful, frustrated, and overwhelmed.

-- This year, I want to make more of an effort to be in touch with my in-laws regarding Max and other topics so that we can build our relationship better.

-- This year, I want to help my sisters out more by offering my baby sitting services to them if possible one day every other month for them to get a break.

Okay, these are my goals/resolutions for 2013. My goal is to write on each 1st week of the month and update where I am on these goals and hopefully keep myself accountable for a better and more fulfilling year. You have probably noticed that most of my goals are relationship based and that is purposeful. For years, I have focused on achievements and accolades and this year, I am focusing on what REALLY matters for me and my home. Thanks for stopping and Happy New Year everyone!

Ranting about Ranting??!!!

Ok is it just me or are people getting really ugly on stating opinions? I am not just talking about the current chick-fil-a/Christian/Anti-gay debate but it certainly encourages some of this rant. It is impossible for me as a believer to back anything that is ugly and demonstrates hatred, anger, or meanness. That isn't because I am a "bleeding-heart liberal" or "ignorant" but because my relationship with Christ makes my heart hurt when I hurt others or treat others unfairly. It is called conviction of my spirit.

Just like my heart aches when I hurt Jesus in other ways like lying, being jealous, engaging in ungodly activities, etc...or....ahem...sin it hurts when I am ugly towards others that God created. I am not sitting here and saying don't stand behind what you believe. It is your right to believe whatever you would like and it is also your right with free speech to state what you believe in written or spoken word. I am speaking more to believers in Jesus Christ here than anyone but....I am quite certain that it is not your right to judge another by being hateful, ugly, or downright cruel to them. There are ways to state your beliefs without causing others to view Christ as someone who condemns them and not someone who loves them deeply and died for anything they might do or engage in that constitutes sin. It hurts me to see the ugliest being believers.

I will not sit here and rant on without saying that sometimes I am ugly. I won't ever let you believe that there are people I don't judge. I judge bad parents,...constantly. I judge ignorant people on a daily basis. I judge Christians that try to take God's place as judge and jury. I also feel deeply convicted about that and try to take this to God daily so that he can change my heart to one of compassion and understanding so that the person may have a chance to learn from me or feel that compassion and in turn feel the love of Jesus Christ.

I try very hard not be ugly and when I catch myself....I repent. I can't imagine saying some of the things that I have seen regarding the current Christian based chicken joint, politics, gay rights, current and past presidents, and the like. Some of things I have seen that have embarrassed me deeply are from "Christians." Please stop doing things in God's name that are just plain ugly and make you look foolish and cruel. It is in distinct opposition to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I would encourage you to choose today whom you will serve....your strong opinions and your need to spew them hatefully at people or Jesus Christ who wishes to see ALL come to know him and to be loved.

Sigh...I am sad today. My heart is heavy in all of this!

Ranted out,

E

Life.

Everything has been pretty crazy in my world lately. My family is going through health turmoil for sure. This has made me think about "life." I have been thinking about how fragile our bodies are and how difficult it is to go through health concerns. On Monday of this week, I woke up to a 102 degree temperature and was feeling totally awful. Luckily I had a doctor's appointment scheduled anyway and found out I had a Kidney infection. Tuesday, my mom started to have hallucinations and I found out that she had an infection in her legs that I didn't realize the severity of. I called 911 that night and she was taken to the hospital to be told she had Sepsis and Cellulitis. On Wednesday we found out that she did not have either of those but actually Staph Infection as well as E-coli in her legs. We also found out that day that her recent Hip replacement (Sept, 2011) had been botched and her femur was entirely crooked and it would need to be redone. On Thursday night I had to take my older sister to the ER because she was having some health concerns as well all to find out on Friday that her health concerns were far more serious than we had thought as well.

My mom was transported to the nearby Nursing home on Friday as well and she is awaiting an appointment with the new surgeon who is going to redo her surgery. Hilliary (sister) will find out next week what is going on and hopefully know her next steps. Overall, I have come to these conclusions this week.

1. When it rains, it certainly pours.

2. I am the one who is "good in crisis"

3. I am grateful for good doctors who care.

4. I love my family and really hurt when they are hurt.

If you all could be in prayer for my family, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for reading!

Either you are...or you aren't.

It would be very understated for me to say that I am frustrated with my Christian brothers and sisters. Lately I have seen so much ugliness within the body and it seems like no matter how much I rant about it, the next day I see something just that much uglier. If you ask almost any Christian why Jesus died on a cross for their sins, they will say something like "Because He loves me" or they will quote John 3:16 -- "For God so LOVED the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever should believe in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life." Love is usually the basis of a walk with Christ. He first loved us, therefore we serve and love him...etc..etc...

Why is there NO love left in our community as believers? There seems to be a lack of love in friendships, marriages, the house of God, and more-so the world. It was never our job to come here and be converted to a life with Christ and then walk around spouting hate and judgement wherever we can. I am not condoning any type of sin but the last time I looked, we are not without sin ourselves. We are just forgiven of it and are living a life not separated from God because of our salvation. Need I remind you, you did NOTHING to deserve God's grace or love. That means, you are just as undeserving as the next Joe is to have God's love and forgiveness.

For example, I was recently made aware that a company that I spend a lot of money at and believe in supports Gay marriage and it was made aware to me by another believer because I am guessing he thought it would make a difference to me. Guess what, Mr. X Christian man...McDonald's has the absolute worst nutrition possible in their establishment which is not treating your temple as the Holy Spirit so um, no more Big Macs for you. I have no problem with people having principles and things that they really want to stand by on their own but keep that to yourself and understand not everyone feels the same way you do in "our" faith.

I am gonna be honest with you, I feel sometimes like I am reading a different Bible. I read it everyday in my quiet time and yet I never find a Jesus in there that seems to picket places that do not obey him or that are lost. I seem to find a man who would rather dine with sinners that preach it up with saints. I seem to read about a man who would rather help a prostitute know His love than to stand outside of her house stating the obvious...she is a sinner. I worship a God who mingled with the "undesirable" and did not just sit in his pew and say "I will not be going down there to the shore today because I heard the homosexuals are serving the coffee!" REALLY? Is this the Christ that you know? We are supposed to be longing and yearning to be Christ-like and instead...I feel like I am hearing so much Pharisee language it deafens me to things people say.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with longing and striving to be holy....but make sure you aren't trying to be holier than someone else. Closeness to God should never take you away from the dying, hungry, broken, lost, or downtrodden. Here is an idea...you don't believe that something is right before God...talk to someone doing it and get to know their heart. Get to know their brokenness, their desires, their spirits. That is what God wants to know. He already knows the other stuff.

I know, this rant is passionate...I wish you could really know just how passionate.

Screaming doesn't seem like enough!

So last night I was sitting with my Iphone playing my games (which I love) such as Words with Friends and my new favorite, Scramble with Friends when I noticed something and had to capture a screen shot. Here it is...

If you look at the bottom of the picture you will see an ad on the screen that says "Track Your Boyfriend Now Using His Cell Phone GPS."

Are you serious? Are we really encouraging women (or men for that matter) to use their boyfriend's cell phone GPS to find out where they are. Unless he has been missing for over 48 hours and you expect foul play, this should not be something that is encouraged. I am not even sure where to begin this rant. Should I start with the obvious violation of privacy or should I go straight for the whole conversation about "if you don't trust him, perhaps don't date him?" It's perplexing even for me, an avid ranter.

There is a verse in the Bible that comes to my head when I think about this ridiculous picture and it is...

Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is sacred; Do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they will trample them under their feet and then turn and tear you to pieces.

No offense boys, but any of you ladies out there know a dog or perhaps a pig. That is the man you would be tracking on that GPS so do yourself a favor and do not give him what is sacred or throw him your pearls. If you are confused at this verse, let me break it down for ya!

Pearls are a thing of value...something that is sacred is that which is set apart to be holy. Perhaps the man that you have to track on his GPS is not the man who should be holding things of value or things that are meant to be God's, like your heart.

Now, if this verse part does not affect you...Let me just say...if you are a woman who is tracking someone on GPS to make sure he is where he says he is...You look stupid. I hate to see a bright woman appear stupid. Walk away for your own integrity. We all see you as pathetic when you have to check text messages, drive around to find him and apparently now, TRACK HIM ON GPS.

LEAVE THIS PERSON NOW.

Consider it ranted upon.

Multiple Choice

Does everyone remember any Math class they had at all? I remember that although I have always been decent at Math, I really preferred when they would give our tests in a multiple choice format. You would have a problem in front of you and yes, you might have had to work it out on your own but there was something at the end of that problem waiting ....a set of answers...and in that set of answers, there was always the right one. Well, unless your teacher was a monster and did those NONE OF THE ABOVE ones and to that teacher, I do not have anything nice to say!

Now, you might be wondering where I am going with this since most of you reading this haven't been in a math class in quite some time. This post isn't about math in the least. It is about making decisions in life and choosing the right answer. I have found lately that I really do not know the right answers in my life. I have realized as well that it would be nice to have four choices from which to choose so that I could narrow down to the right choice. I have been thinking about making right choices and good judgments and I have come down to this...I have a system and it usually works for me. In saying that, I believe that every person has to come to their own system of making right choices and when something works, stick with it.

Now, before you get worried, I am not going to just toss out there the old saying "pray about it" because as an adult who makes decisions daily, it is not always easy to just pray and come up with a good answer. Although, I should note that is my first step of making good decisions because there is no replacement for the Holy Spirit in your life that is your guide. For those of you out there who do not practice Christianity, that doesn't mean you don't need help making healthy and good decisions so I thought I would throw out my strategy and let you dig through it for a bit.

Here is generally how I make decisions and USUALLY (emphasis very important) they turn out to be the right decision for myself, my family, and align well with my faith (the most important component of me!)

Step # 1:

Ask God what he thinks!

Now, as I mentioned above a few times...my faith is incredibly important to me and guides much of my life. I believe that God's hand is in so many of the great things I now have and have done and when I was making some

really raunchy bad decisions.

Many of you reading this will say "Erica, how do you ask God about something and more importantly, how do you know what He says back to you?" Well...I can answer that fairly simply with a question back to you. Do you ever hear a voice in your head when you are doing something and there is a twinge in your spirit that says "This doesn't feel right." That, my friend is the Holy Spirit. Your gut is more important than any decision making tool I can give you or advise you to use. God planted that in us for a reason. It is to help us to make good decisions. Trust that gut.

Step #2:

Look at your priorities.

It is easier to make decisions in any situation if you know what your priorities are in life. For example, if you need to make a decision if you should take a job or not...here is a great method to figure that out. Make a quick list of your top 3 priorities. In my case that is...

1. My relationship with God
2. My relationship with Anthony
3. My health (physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, financial)

Now, look at the job opportunity and make sure this does not get in the way of these priorities, especially looking at the top two if it does....run..don't walk away from this opportunity. I know that sometimes the answer does not seem that easy because you may need a new job or something but at the end of everything, you will find that it just isn't the right choice.

Step # 3:

This is the third and final step of making good decisions...MAKE ONE. The worst thing that I see people do is wait to make a decision until a decision is made for them. A good example is the idea that there is a really great vehicle for sale for your family at the nearby car lot. You pass it every day going to work. Your car is getting old and isn't really safe for the kids. You know that the car is in your price range because you have already figured out the financing and even made sure it fit in your family budget but you decide to wait a few weeks to make the decision. While you are waiting, another family has signed paperwork and drove your car off the lot. Sometimes things happen to us while we are waiting to make choices. I'm not saying to be impulsive but to prayerfully consider, weigh it out, and TAKE A STEP. No decision equals a decision that you have no choice in at all.

I hope you all make great choices today

Act like you are wise!

So this morning, I was reading the bible in my quiet time and this is the verse that stuck out at me and I started to rant in my own mind. This was said by Jesus in Matthew 11:18-19. Let me give you a little context here first. Jesus is talking to a crowd of people about John the Baptist. He is explaining to the crowd that they are doubting John even though he was good at keeping the "rules" however they look at Jesus who followed almost none of the "rules" like not befriending tax collectors and sinners and trust him. He is trying to speak on behalf of John. The next verse made me almost get goosebumps. It says "But wisdom is proved by her actions." For years, through this blog I have been on a search for wisdom. I have read Proverbs more times than I can count for it is a WISDOM book written by Solomon who was seen as WISE. I have gotten faith based therapy and even tried to continue my Christian education. Wisdom seems to be my greatest goal sometimes. I have always dreamed that one day when my time on Earth is done...I would be called wise. I always try to give myself the clearest definition when looking into a topic so here...

Wisdom: (N) The quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment, the quality of being wise.
The soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of such experience, knowledge, and good judgment.

So having said this, my rant begins here. It is not enough in life to just have experience. Let me give you an example.

(Names have been changed to protect the unwise)

Two girls, Elizabeth and Janet were friends for years. They met in Junior High and started developing a close friendship. Elizabeth would stay all night at Janet's house for days on end. Every social event, they were together thick as thieves. They were in Junior High so many things happened to cause drama like Janet telling things to others that Elizabeth had told her in the strictest of confidence. Elizabeth telling lies to Janet to make her like her more and things like this that young girls do.

Fast forward to high school when Elizabeth and Janet start seeing boys on a regular basis and although Janet was always raised a Christian, Elizabeth became one in high school. This was a huge movement for Elizabeth and her behaviors started to change radically. She started to treat people better, not tell her lies anymore, and even started to change her friend group to include those that shared her faith. This, of course, included Janet because Janet had been raised in the faith.

Janet continued to do things that were not friendly nor kind to Elizabeth including asking her to lie for her while she did things against her parent's wishes and God's. Elizabeth felt wrong about this but with her teenage self-esteem could not bring herself to stand up for God, Janet's parents, or even herself. The relationship was slowly becoming very difficult for Elizabeth. She decided it was in her best interest to distance herself from Janet. Words were said, hostilities arose, and the relationship was tense at the very least.

For years, the two girls didn't really hang out and they went their separate ways, Elizabeth going to college and Janet going into the workforce. In their college years, they seem to make peace and came back together to be friends again. Elizabeth was looking forward to she and Janet making peace and starting to be adult friends where things would not be so dramatic. Guess what???!!! Janet had not changed. She still used Elizabeth and justified her wrong doing and even told everyone else everything Elizabeth said. Also, when Elizabeth confided her sins in Janet for accountability, Janet would bring them back in arguments so that she could shame Elizabeth about her sin life.

Finally....Elizabeth got wise. She had the experience of being burned and hurt by Janet. She even had the Knowledge about who Janet was and how she would always be...but it took a longer time for her to gain the good judgment to say enough is enough. Elizabeth asked Janet to no longer contact her. She gave her forgiveness and prayed for Janet that everything would be great in her life and gave her a word of blessing and decided that from that day forth...it would be okay to not have Janet as a friend. Janet wasn't a great friend and that was wisdom.

Does anyone read this and think of yourself? I'll give you a hint about his story...Elizabeth starts with an E for a reason...I was that girl that was hurt over and over by a friend and eventually gained wisdom. I believe that that piece of wisdom has aided in my life by helping me detect those people who are unsafe before they have a chance to injure me. I have some ranting to do about people who never gain wisdom.

The girl who continually gets cheated on by her boyfriend but never leaves....you have gained experience to know that man is a cheater. You have gained knowledge about his character...now gain some good judgment and MOVE ON. In your action, there lies the wisdom.

The person who always picks friends who are takers. Yes, it is okay to give to others but if these friends use you up...perhaps we should use our experience and knowledge to make good judgments and choose people who are better to us.

The Christian who continually goes down the same road of temptation and thinks that it will have a different outcome today. Use the experience and knowledge of the past to have the good judgment to choose differently today.

Am I reaching anyone out there....is there somewhere today you can use your experience and your knowledge to gain some wisdom and act differently.

As Jesus said...

"But Wisdom is proved right by her ACTIONS" -- emphasis mine :)

D is for Divorce and Devastation

So today, I was reading a Facebook post about the Today Show saying the phrase "Healthy Divorce" and how sad everyone was about the use of that phrase. I think that is a really sad phrase as well so I am making it the subject of my current rant. I need to say a couple of things before I rant...

I do not in any way condone infidelity or abuse. If you are in a relationship with someone (married or not) that is mistreating you, I condone taking an exit and working towards a resolution. Sometimes this may mean reconciliation and sometimes this may mean legal separation, and others it may mean a divorce is necessary. This post ...is not about those situations.

I decided before I ranted to get educated. Since Anthony and I live in the state of Indiana now, I went ahead and pulled up the laws on divorce in Indiana. This is what I found...

Dissolution of marriage shall be decreed upon a finding by a court of one (1) of the following grounds and no other ground:

No Fault:
(1) Irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

Fault:
(1) The conviction of either of the parties, subsequent to the marriage, of a felony. (2) Impotence, existing at the time of the marriage. (3) Incurable insanity of either party for a period of at least two (2) years. (Indiana Code - Title 31 - Article 15 - Chapters: 2-3) (www.divorcesource.com)

So from what I am reading here, you can get divorced for ANY reason. Yes, it says something fancy like NO OTHER GROUNDS but let's be honest...can't we all say that we have an irretrievable breakdown of a marriage? Let me talk about marriage for a minute. I am a Marriage Family Therapist Intern, therefore....I guess I am sort of an expert (rolls eyes)

I am married and have been for almost 3.5 years. In that time, we have had a lot of heartbreak, pain, and even quite a few arguments. We are in no way perfect at doing this thing. We love each other with everything we have, however, I can see where we would have an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage if we were not diligent about caring for it and nurturing it. We have lost a child, a job, had to move out of our first home due to finances, and even moved 2,000 miles away from where we started so to say we just haven't had challenges yet would be completely bogus. We have had challenges and some of those landed us in the fetal position crying our eyes out and praying for God to save us from ourselves. AND HE DID.

Now, let me talk about divorce. In case you aren't aware of how Webster feels about it...

Divorce: The action or an instance of LEGALLY dissolving a marriage. (emphasis mine)

The thing I think that is really important to note here is that this definition leads us to the premise that divorce is a verb. If you are not English inclined, a verb is a part of speech that signifies an action. That means, we divorce....we did not get a divorce. I think that makes an even bigger point that it is a choice and a thing we indeed DO! I am not saying that there are not situations where people are served divorce papers and they did not want that for themselves but that is not the situation I am speaking of.

Another important note to the definition is that the dissolution of the marriage is LEGAL. That means spiritually...it isn't so. The Bible has this to say about divorce:

In Malachi 2:16, it states that God HATES divorce.

In Matthew 19:3-9 we actually get a glimpse of Jesus' thoughts on Divorce. It says this...

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

I know that some of you that are reading this have been through a divorce and probably have a million reasons that it was necessary and probably some of you even line up with the verses above. I understand that and have NO judgement. I am more concerned with people's thoughts and feelings on marriage and divorce as a whole. I am more concerned with the decision to marry than with the decision to divorce.

As a therapist, I like to address the beginning of any problem because that is where we can do work and make changes that create less problems in the future. I can assure you that God's grace is sufficient for you no matter what your marital status or marital past is. But, I think it is necessary to begin having a new idea on marriage and divorce when we become Christians and want to be Christ-followers. It is important to look at marriage realistically and not ideally.

I say a lot with clients as well as with friends that marriage is difficult when it is easy and I mean that. If we go in thinking that marriage is going to be a breeze because this person completes me or whatever such nonsense we see on movies...we are making a grave error. I completely feel that if that is how we go into a marriage this is the picture we create for our future...

If we go in with our minds right knowing that it will be a challenge. There will be hard times. There will be times we don't feel warm and fuzzy. There will be times that we want to walk out but we will do everything we can to keep it alive and well...we stand a higher chance of our lives having peace and happiness. If you do not feel like you can stand with this person through these things...please don't get married. Save yourself the pain, your partner the pain and most importantly any future or current children the severe devastation that is divorce...

Also...you can disagree with me and we'll be friends, that is the kind of relationships I exist in. I can handle your differing opinion.

Thanks for reading...

Jesus for President!

Most of you have probably seen the Youtube video of a young man from Washington State who does spoken word on the subject of Christianity. It is powerful to watch and think about. We all, as believers have had our moments of being completely hypocritical and this gave words to some of the thoughts that have been going through my mind lately. I have been having problems with my fellow brothers and sisters more since about 2008 and some of the political ugliness that I have seen spew out of people who call themselves Christ Followers. I have seen this mostly on social networking sites like twitter and facebook because they are "safe" forums to not have to stand up for what you believe in a Christ-like manner. It is easy to forward some racial or politically ugly picture and not be the source of it than to stand up and be counted and stand in your Christ-given freedom to not be a part of the world.

Now, I am not endorsing one political party or another and will not be sharing my own political beliefs on this post, however, I know that a relationship with Christ should lead you to yield some good fruit instead of mud slinging, name calling, racial slurring, and just plain ugliness. I have seen pictures depicting our nation's leader in situations that seemed to me to qualify as Course Joking. I have heard disputes where one group of people are calling another group of people idiots or something even more ugly just because they differ in their views on medical benefits.

I guess my question to all of you that are doing this is...is this worth it? Is it worth destroying your witness and smudging Christ's name for your political agenda or for your friends in your "party" to get a laugh at your president's or presidential candidates expense. I realize the leaders (both present and previous) have made mistakes and led our country astray at times. I also know that the decisions made in the White House, Congress, etc... haven't always been "Christ-centric" but there is much to be learned from Matthew in the scenes of Jesus' conviction and eventual turn over into the Roman Government's hands. How did he conduct himself?

I don't remember him making a comment like "Well, it's probably because there is a Roman in government that I am going to be put to death!" or even "These people are idiots, they are not worth my time" nor did I see him having his friends come together to hold signs asking to vote that person out of office but they were still respectful of those that were put in governmental positions. Does this mean we have to roll over and accept things happening in our country that do not line up with scripture. NOT AT ALL.

My argument is that the godly do not heckle, joke, and sit around posting facebook pictures that are derogatory and downright cruel. They get up, pray for their country and its leaders and see the president as the neighbor that Jesus was talking about when he said LOVE THY NEIGHBOR as THYSELF. They also make positive changes by writing letters, campaigning in a upright and integrity filled way and stop being the ugly that this country believes we are in the Christian faith.

My hope is that those of you who wish to act this way politically...would stop putting Jesus' name on it. Just a note, that guy you are heckling and joking about...is his creation made in HIS image. The same woman that you are joking about due to her upbringing or beliefs is the woman that Jesus went to the cross for and died for. We all need to become a little more aware of our words and the kind of message they depict for those that do not know the Jesus of the Bible who was full of compassion, conviction, dignity, integrity, and LOVE.

I am in no way arguing that Christians should have no part in politics. We definitely need to take our place in government so that we are being heard and noticed in the governmental departments of our country...however....we also need to do it with the right guide, the HOLY SPIRIT. I can stand firm in knowing that the HOLY SPIRIT did not lead you to forward that post about how democrats are like toddlers or how republicans are just trying to get richer. Let's be what we say we are...just a note.

Here is the video I referenced earlier...

I started to think about how we are asked to conduct ourselves according to scripture and inquired of a dear friend to give me some idea what Jesus asks of us and these are his thoughts....

In Romans 12 Paul gives a few tips meaningful to this conversation. Verses 15-16 really hit home: "If others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow. Live in harmony with with each other. Don't try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don't think you know it all."

One verse that has really stood out to me lately on this subject is John 9:1-34, focus on v24. Here the Jewish leaders cornered a man who was healed on the sabbath, which didn't fit their idea of what spirituality looked like. In trying to get the man to confess that Jesus was evil (and therefore his view on right and wrong were jacked up) they say "Give glory to God! We know this man is a sinner." This gets overlooked easily but is very important. The use of spirituality and guilt is sickening. They are basically saying "If you want God to be happy with you, you'll agree with us on this." Sound familiar? People on both sides of the aisle say the same type of thing. Some using spirituality, "If yer a dad-gum Jesus follower yu'll hate what I hate." Others using morality and generalizations, "Unless you hate kids and want them to have no schools and insurance you'll vote like I do. Other using intellect, "If you want to be enlightened like me and not a myth believing idiot, you'll have the same views as me."

This was so well written I did not want to take it into my own hands! My friend Nick wrote it and it is so true...this behavior just doesn't line up.

I couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer!

Thanks for reading today's rant!

I have a Dream...

Today, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, I have decided to write my own, 2012 I have a Dream Speech. I hope you all are encouraged to dream for bigger and better things in the new year.

I am happy to join with you, my blogging community today to celebrate a great man who 4 score and 9 years ago, gave a speech to call for racial equality and to end discrimination. Although that speech did not reverse all racism and discrimination, it certainly created a snowball effect that has changed the course of our country's history as well as my own personal history. It was rooted in the idea that we have an "American Dream." Although we still face difficulties in this nation, I am still dreaming and thought I would share some of my dreams with you in my own personal, "I have a Dream Speech!"

I have a dream that one day there will be no one following Anthony and I around a store asking if they can help us over and over.

I have a dream that one day people won't tell me how "okay" they are with my marriage and think they are being kind.

I have a dream that one day the world will truly be "diabetic friendly."

I have a dream that one day people will realize that even with diabetic advances, we do not get to live a "normal" life. (Try taking 5 shots a day or living with a pump attached to you and see if you feel normal.

I have a dream that one day all people will think before getting married, that it is a lifelong commitment and is to be taken seriously.

I have a dream that one day we will require more than just reproductive organs to become a "parent."

I have a dream that one day Jesus will not be mocked by his own people. (Some unbelievers have more respect than believers)

I have a dream that one day my worth as a woman will be centered around my character and actions, and not on my measurements or my ability to bear children.

I have a dream that one day my ears will not have to hear any people, especially those of color, using racial slurs.

I have a dream that one day people will acknowledge miscarriage as a loss and not say insensitive things like "You can always try again" or "It must have been meant to be."

I have a dream that one day people will stop smoking cigarettes around children, as it is not their choice to take cancer into their little bodies.

I have a dream that one day cancer will no longer be a threat at all

I have a dream that one day child abuse and neglect will hold much harsher punishment.

I have a dream that one day therapy will be people's first step to solving problems and looking for help rather than their last ditch resort.

I have a dream that one day every child will know that they are smart and capable, even if their strengths are not in the academic realm

I have a dream that one day it will become difficult for people to break their promises.

I have a dream that one day wives will speak highly of their husbands more frequently and not disparage them in front of others. (Here is an idea, marry someone that you respect)

I have a dream that one day I will change the world in some small way.

Happy Birthday MLK! Thank you for how you changed my life personally for the wonderful!

Prison.

So Anthony and I have recently become really into a television show on Netflix that only has 13 episodes. Yep, you guessed from the picture above, Prison Wives. The premise of the show is that each episode focuses on one family who has one spouse in the penitentiary. Generally it is a man in jail, therefore the show is called Prison WIVES. Each episode gets more ridiculous than the last in that there is a woman (usually) who is pining away for a man they started to write to as a pen-pal while he was incarcerated and "fell in love" with him. I won't say that there are not exceptions like the woman was married to a man before she found out he was a hit man for the mob and she stayed married to him despite his life sentence without the possibility of parole. Most of them, however, are women who got involved after the sentence was passed down and to be honest, most of these stories have been murder charges which is really troubling.

This show has me thinking about what we allow in our lives. Each of us allows a certain level of care and behavior showed toward us. We all have the choice to say "Enough is enough" but it seems to me that some of us, don't have the strength. I have pretty much always been someone who does not tolerate abuse or mistreatment. I can thank my mama for that as she ingrained in me that it was not my job to take other's abuse or tolerate mistreatment from anyone, although mostly she meant males.

As I watch this show, I get sad because I know women who do not date inmates or have conjugal visits, yet they still are living in prison with the men they love. They are prisoners to his emotions, moods, and deciding whether he is serious about them. I have a few things to say about this (as usual).

  • Only you can decide how you want to be treated. If you don't want to wait for someone to make up their mind, move on.
  • People are usually exactly who they are. If the person you are seeing is being rude or disrespectful...they are being honest. Believe THEM!
  • Marriage is incredibly hard even when you feel the same about each other, get along, and have mutual respect. Why add difficulty to it by being with someone who is half there, rude, disrespectful, combative and stupid!
The other thing that kept coming to my mind while I watched these women sleeping outside of the prison in their cars, moving their children after a few months in a place because their incarcerated husband has been transferred to a new prison, and sending all of their money to their prisoner husband was.....IDOL MUCH??

Having something that comes before your God is always a bad idea but these men also come before their children, their health, and their other family members. I mean, I could preach all day on why it would not be best to hook up with a man in prison with a life sentence but I am using that as an example to encourage women not to sign on to a life sentence with someone who does not treat you fairly and if you are putting them before really important things in your life already....perhaps you have already been infected.

There is more than one way to be incarcerated in life. You can commit a crime and be put away in a physical prison with bars, a publicly seen toilet, and very few rights or you can sign on to be "in love" or marry someone who is absolutely horrible for you and has no regard to your personal well-fare. Both seem to be a horrible place to be if you ask me. Please love you enough to ask the person you are with for life to love you back. If he (or she) doesn't...call it a dodged bullet as you RUN, not walk away!

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for the man Anthony is. He takes such pride in his work and always works as if he is working for you. Thank you for his art talent, his ability to be great at customer service, his smile, his laughter, and his sweet non-judgmental spirit. He is precious and I know that you knit him together in his mother's womb. He is fearfully and WONDERFULLY made. Thank you for that Lord.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for my ability to help little ones when they struggle in school. It is such a rewarding job. Thank you for their families who trust me with their little ones and appreciate my hard work. Mostly Jesus, thank you for the results of hard work...little ones feeling more confident in their academic abilities.

My biggest fears.

We all have fears. Some of us are afraid of heights, some of spiders and snakes, some of perverted clowns (wait, that just me?) and some of us of our own bodies. My biggest fear that has been plaguing me for a while is my battle with Diabetes. First of all;

Fear: an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

Also, some fears are completely irrational (probably goes back to my clown fear) and some are completely rational like not walking out to your car at night after midnight alone as a woman. My fear of my disease killing me is pretty rational. Granted it was really more rational before when I was in denial that I even had this crappy disease but today, I accept it. I accept that I am Type I diabetic and I accept that with that, comes complications if I don't take proper care of myself. I accept that being overweight is not good for my diabetes and being in denial did not serve me at all. I also accept that when I don't take care of my diabetes, I end up being depressed as well. Now, onto the fear part.

Lately, I have been losing sleep. I have been having nightmares, etc... about my diabetes and what is going to take from me. I have had a lot of fears about my kidneys not working and causing it for me to never be a mom. Instead of becoming depressed and giving up this time though, I went to the word. You won't believe what I was given in my daily devotional today:

Here are the verses that were in my devotional today:

Psalm 91: 1-16

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD; He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with this wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The LORD says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation."

I know that was a lot of scripture but there was so much to be said in those verses especially to the fears I have been going through. I was so calmed as I realized, this isn't my battle to fight. I can do as I need to do and give Jesus my struggle with diabetes and he is going to be beat deadly disease! Does that mean I will be cured of diabetes? I don't know....but even if I am not I know that with God's help, I will defeat it and it won't take me down or steal from me. It is time I showed my disease who my God is! They need introduced.

God was speaking to me about fear today and I hope it has helped you in some way!
